Back in June, we reported on the 2024 Lexus TX and Toyota Grand Highlander airbag malfunction, which resulted in a recall and a stop sale. Now, according to Automotive News, there’s a fix.
What was the Lexus TX, Toyota Grand Highlander airbag malfunction?
The recall notification stated that the curtain shield airbag on the driver’s side may not deploy as intended if the driver’s window is rolled down. In addition to being a safety risk, this malfunction means the vehicles might not meet federal safety standards.
It involved nearly 145k vehicles.Â
So, what’s the fix?
The Automotive News article states that Toyota has redesigned the curtain shield airbags on the driver and passenger side of both the Lexus TX and Toyota Grand Highlander. Apparently, when the driver’s side window was down, the curtain shield airbag failed to stay inside the cabin, which means it was not in compliance with federal safety standards.
Part of the fix: Modifying the airbags anchoring systems.Â
In the Automotive News article, Toyota representatives said the modified airbag worked as expected in testing and will bring the vehicles back into compliance.
With production paused, a total of about 158k vehicles, including vehicles still on dealer lots, will need to be repaired.
