In another clear break from the former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares days, the 2025 Jeep Wrangler automatic transmission returns to the 3.5-liter V6 engine.

The 8-speed ZF-sourced transmission will complement the standard 6-speed manual transmission with a $4,500 upcharge for the automatic.
This transmission had left the lineup, a move seen by fans as a push by then-CEO Tavares to get consumers to opt for the plug-in hybrid 4xe model with the 8-speed automatic transmission.
Reversing this decision just 10 days after the CEO’s sudden departure is a win for consumers who want choices when it comes to buying a new vehicle.
“In response to enthusiastic requests, we’re reintroducing the eight-speed automatic transmission for V6 Wrangler models, underscoring our commitment to freedom of choice, performance, and versatility for every adventure,” said Bob Broderdorf, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America. “We deeply value our community’s passion and input.”
This move comes just a week after former Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis rejoined the company.
The bottom line
Jeep sales have been trending poorly for sometime and this move should help regain customers opting for other vehicles like the Ford Bronco.
This is especially the case with the dwindling numbers of manual transmission buyers on the market.
