The 2025 Toyota 4Runner, the sixth generation of one of America’s favorite off-road SUVs, will begin arriving at dealerships soon. Along with an all-new design and upgraded capabilities, the long-running mid-size body-on-frame SUV has inducted a hybrid powertrain option. Here’s everything we know about the 2025 Toyota 4Runner Hybrid so far:
Design
Toyota derived the 4Runner Hybrid on the basis of the Tacoma Hybrid and that is evident in the similar design. Like the pickup truck, it has a rugged and purposeful exterior in an old-school style that gives it an authentic American SUV character.
With its muscular and upright front-end, the 2025 4Runner Hybrid makes a solid first impression. The high-set and flattish hood, the high-mount headlamps with built-in DRLs, the wide grille, and the prominently placed horizontal Rigid LED fog lamps give the SUV an assertive look. Plus, available off-roading-focused TRD Pro and overlanding-focused Trailhunter grades feature a high-clearance front bumper design for better approach angles.
The TRD Pro and Trailhunter grades flaunt a heritage grille with a block-lettered brand inscription in the upper part and a 20-inch LED light bar in the lower part. The latter’s LED fog lamps offer a unique color-switching function. Lastly, Toyota equips the overlanding-focused grade with a low-profile snorkel and a high-strength steel skid plate as well.
On the sides, squarish and large glass panels, straight character lines, and muscular body panels give the 2025 4Runner Hybrid a proper old-school SUV appearance. The wrap-over rear quarter glass adds to this look, while also elevating sophistication. The small kick in the belt line towards the end improves elegance. The high ground clearance, squared-off wheel arches, and 20-inch wheels lend the mid-size SUV its much-needed powerful stance.
The Trailhunter grade features ARB’s Old Man Emu (OME) 2.5-inch forged shocks with rear external piggyback remote reservoirs. Along with the exclusive shock absorbers, 33-inch Toyo Open Country all-terrain tires boost it up 2.0 inches in the front and 1.5 inches in the rear.
The rear-end leans forward only slightly, resulting in an overall upright look. Its design is too similar to the fifth-gen 4Runner and does not create the same excitement as the front-end and side profile. The same goes for the tail lamps, which look too small and dull for such a big and burly SUV. Thankfully, the signature roll-down glass is present, something pet lovers will particularly appreciate.
Interior
The interior of the 2025 Toyota 4Runner Hybrid is nearly identical to the 2025 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid. The hybrid SUV embodies a modern-tough theme, most evident in the chunky dashboard and the center console. Toyota designers have used push-back buttons, toggle switches, and rotary dials for all the essential controls, and that, too, optimally, ensuring customers do not feel there’s a steep learning curve involved and the cabin does not look cluttered.
Toyota will equip the 2025 4Runner Hybrid with a new 8-inch or a first-ever 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system depending on the grade, both with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto compatibility. Similarly, the company will give customers a choice of 7- and 12.3-inch driver information displays.
A head-up display, a Qi wireless charging pad with a higher power output, USB-C ports in the front and rear, and a shareable Digital Key are some of the other noteworthy tech features of the 2025 4Runner Hybrid. Lastly, Toyota offers the hybrid SUV with also a JBL audio system that includes a JBL FLEX portable speaker that can be docked on the dashboard as the center channel speaker or be undocked to be used as a portable speaker on built-in battery power.
Toyota offers heated, ventilated, and power-adjustable seats with power-adjustable lumbar support in the first row and heated seats in the second row. Available comfort features include a dual-zone automatic climate control system and a heated steering wheel as well.
Specifications
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner Hybrid sits on the new TNGA-F global truck platform, which underpins four more Toyotas in the U.S. – Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra, and Sequoia. This platform incorporates a high-strength boxed, steel-ladder frame and features a multi-link coil rear and double-wishbone front suspension. It makes the first-ever 4Runner Hybrid more robust than the fifth-generation, gas-only 4Runner, which was based on the same platform as the FJ Cruiser. The new platform offers enhanced ride comfort and on-road manners as well.
Powering the 2025 Toyota 4Runner Hybrid are a 2.4-liter turbocharged gas engine and a 48-horsepower electric motor. The latter lies inside an 8-speed automatic transmission and utilizes a 1.87 kWh NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) battery pack. Together, the gas engine and the electric motor crank out up to 326 horsepower and an incredible 465 lb.-ft. of torque. The all-new hybrid SUV can tow up to 6,000 pounds. Toyota has yet to disclose the fuel efficiency figures.
The 2025 4Runner Hybrid is engineered for maximum off-road performance. It has up to 32º approach and 24º departure angles. Toyota offers the hybrid SUV with part-time and full-time 4WD system options, both featuring an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range. Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and an automatic limited-slip differential (Auto LSD) are standard in 4WD configurations. Toyota offers the full-time 4WD system with a center locking differential optionally in a Limited grade and as standard in the Platinum grade.
An electronic locking rear differential is standard on the more off-road-focused TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter grades. An updated Multi-Terrain Select system that functions in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low, a new, quieter CRAWL Control function, Downhill Assist Control, Multi-Terrain Monitor system, and stabilizer bar disconnect mechanism are some more noteworthy off-roading features of the 2025 4Runner.
Price
Toyota has confirmed will launch the 2025 4Runner Hybrid in the U.S. in TRD Off-Road, Limited, TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Platinum grades. We expect it to cost around USD 47,000 in the base TRD Off-Road grade. The company plans to manufacture it in Tahara (Aichi Prefecture), Japan.
