CUE is the AI Basketball Robot. In 2017, the Toyota Engineering Society, a group made up of volunteers, began a project to develop AI from scratch. Since then, it has developed in many ways, learning to shoot baskets from further and further away, to dribble, and more.
In 2019, it successfully made 2,020 consecutive free throws, achieving a Guinness World Record™ for the most consecutive basketball free throws by a humanoid robot (assisted).
Now, it is in its sixth generation and a member of the professional basketball team Alvark Tokyo (jersey number 96).
This time, CUE attempted to make the farthest basketball shot by a humanoid robot. It was an extremely long shot with a distance of 24.5 meters. FIBA (International Basketball Federation) regulation court size is 28 meters, so this shot means standing at one edge of the court to sink a basket at the other edge.
The developers involved are younger members who saw the 2019 record achievement and were inspired to participate. They had to install 350 wires, increase the strength of the right arm, and make many incremental improvements in the robot’s shooting form.
Tune in to see what happens when CUE throws a basketball carrying the development team’s hopes and dreams.
