Bloat has found its way to the newest AMG GT. So compared to the previous one, does that mean it better, worse or both?

Sometimes we don’t always recognize greatness. At least till it is replaced with something else. That might be the case with the AMG GT. Now on its second generation, the GT isn’t as much of an evolution of the original as it is a complete re-think.

While outward appearances change only slightly, under the skin, the C192 is all new. A traditional engine layout is now used instead of the transaxle setup from the C190. The engine is now the M177 standard sump instead of the M178 dry sump. It also deploys 4-Matic all wheel drive.

Which AMG GT Flavor Is Best? Old School Fun Or Tech Heavy Wizardry?

It makes the new GT a much better car for every day life. It’s bigger, more comfortable. Maybe even more economical if that’s your thing. Everything is “better” with the C192. But maybe it is a bit too good for its own good.

As mentioned before, we don’t realize a high water mark when we reach it. ThrottleHouse recently put the two together, and the differences are quite stark. The new GT has grown, and the bulbous design is quite different than the sleek, long and low C190. While the C192 looks nice, it’s just not quite like the first generation. And weirdly, it has grown some interesting styling features. Vents and scoops are now fake, and some trim just doesn’t seem to match up in continuity.

The interior tells the same story. The C192 has an interior dominated by a large central screen. And other than that, is actually quite plain. The prior edition? It’s an art piece with buttons and symmetry throughout, and quad vents adorn the dash as well. It’s almost as though thats what the concept version would have looked like.

Driving dynamics are affected, too. There’s a seven hundred pound difference between the two cars. That’s noticeable no matter what electronic wizardy AMG may have done with differentials, rear steering, active torque vectoring and so on. So in all, it makes us really appreciate the C190 a lot more than we otherwise would have.
