Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this restored 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T two-door hardtop. This was Dodge’s first pony car, and so strong was its styling that the ‘70 influenced a latter-day show car that ended up making production for many years more than the original. This example features the standard 383 Magnum backed by a TorqueFlite automatic transmission. Features particular to this example include power steering with simulated wood-rim steering wheel, power brakes, air conditioning, center console, and AM radio. Painted Sublime with a black interior, this first-year Challenger comes from the selling dealer with a clear title.
Restored in 1988, this Sublime (code FJ5) paint is the correct color for this Dodge. It is complemented by a black longitudinal R/T stripe, though the original one on this vehicle was white. Other features include non-functional scooped hood, wheel opening moldings, left-hand side mirror, and a pair of twin exhaust tips poking through the rear valence.
A set of F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GT bias-ply tires is wrapped in 15-inch Road Wheels.
The original white vinyl interior with black components (code H6XW) has been replaced by black all around. Features include bucket seats, simulated wood-rimmed steering wheel, center console with Slap-Stik shifter, air conditioning, and pushbutton AM radio.
The instrument panel includes a 150-mph speedometer with 8,000-rpm tachometer plus gauges for the oil pressure, alternator, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The odometer reads 23,632 miles (of which less than 3,000 have been added since restoration), though the true mileage is unknown.
The 335-horsepower 383 Magnum features a single four-barrel carburetor. It is hooked to a TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission.
The undercarriage features an independent front suspension with torsion bars, and an 8¾-inch solid rear-drive axle housing 3.23 gears. Braking is handled by power four-wheel drums. A dual exhaust system exits to the rear.
