Ever since Karl Benz put the first internal combustion engine in a car in 1886, the pioneers at Mercedes-Benz have been producing innovative, stylish, and reliable automobiles. But which of those cars is the best Mercedes model in history?
Below we’ll go over a few of the most beloved cars Mercedes have ever made, giving you a view of the long and storied history of this great automobile company.
R107 Chassis
This designation covers a whole host of iconic Mercedes Models produced between 1972 and 1989, including models such as the 380 SL, 450 SL, 560 SL, and many more. Easily recognizable with two seats and a detachable roof, these cars were, for many years, and are still today, some of the best-looking roadsters available.
G-Class
The G-Class, commonly known as a G-Wagon, is also very popular, being produced for 43 years and having over 400,000 units built over that span.
The G-Class was originally developed for use in military operations, but in 1979 it was released commercially with great success. It is iconic for its boxy shape and is especially popular with celebrities in Hollywood and beyond.
1991 500E
When Mercedes discovered that their newly designed 500E was too big to fit through the normal W124 assembly line, they contracted Porsche to produce this now iconic Mercedes sedan. With a V8 engine, bigger brakes, and a beefed-up suspension, this car is known for its bigger and more powerful look and feel.
300SL Gullwing
Based on a Mercedes W194 race car, the 300SL Gullwing Coupe debuted as the fastest car on the market, reaching speeds of up to 163 mph in 1954. It was also the introduction of the easily recognizable SL distinction, which designated Mercedes’ super-light or sports-light cars.
Other than being fast, the 300SL is also a beautiful car, especially noted for its majestic gullwing doors. In fact, it was voted the “sports car of the century” by a panel of experts in 1999.
SLR McLaren
Made partly as an homage to the iconic 300SL Gullwing, this Mercedes was the product of another collaboration, this time with McLaren, which at the time was 40% owned by Mercedes.
Produced from 2003 to 2009, this car came in coupe, roadster, and speedster styles, and its 5.4L V8 engine could reach a top speed of 203 mph and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds.
C63 AMG Coupe
Produced by Mercedes’ high performance subsidiary AMG, the C63 ran from 2007 to 2014 with great success. By mixing the sleek C-Class with an aggressive 4.7L V8 Biturbo engine with 503 hp, you get a stylish yet powerful coupe that can reach 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds.
