Part of what it means to own a Mercedes Benz is to own a car that is at the forefront of luxury. The precision of German engineering means that your Mercedes is set up to drive fast, smooth, and safe for as long as possible.
But Mercedes’ commitment to quality doesn’t just mean recreating the same old car year after year. Making great cars also means constantly innovating, and great new ideas are a crucial part of the Mercedes Benz user experience.
This dedication to innovation has a long and storied past, going back to the first ever automobile, which was patented in 1886 by Carl Benz. Below we’ll talk about some of the other important innovations of the Mercedes-Benz company.
Honeycomb Radiator
One of the first innovations developed by the Mercedes-Benz company was the Honeycomb Radiator, which had a characteristic honeycomb pattern that allowed the air to cool the engine, with a remarkable design very similar to the one used today.
The honeycomb radiator was first introduced in 1901 and made its debut on the front of the Mercedes 35 HP.
Four Wheel Independent Suspension
By 1931, Mercedes developed another hugely important technology, giving each wheel its own independent suspension so that they could respond individually to the bumps and gaps in the road.
This made for a much more comfortable riding experience and was an early indicator of Mercedes’ proclivity for comfort and luxury. At a Paris display, the Mercedes-Benz 170 demonstrated the new technology, with leaf springs on the front wheels and a swing-type rear axle connecting the back two.
Electronic Stability Program
The Electronic Stability Program, or ESP, was invented in 1995 and helps drivers maintain stability around corners or during evasive maneuvers by managing the car’s powertrain system.
ESP monitors things like tire pressure and detects when your car is skidding so that it can correct the car’s motion and put you back in control as soon as possible. ESP is now required by law in all cars because of how much safer it makes them.
Pre-Safe
Another radical innovation was the invention in 2002 of Pre-Safe technology, designed to keep you safer in the event of an accident. Equipped with a network of sensors, a Pre-Safe Mercedes will anticipate accidents, making headrests adjust, seat belts tighten, and windows close.
The newest Mercedes models even emit “pink noise” so that your ears aren’t as shocked by the sound of impact in a collision.
