Red Flags at a Car Mechanic’s Shop
All car owners eventually have to face car trouble. Regardless of the problem, it’s a pretty good idea to take it to the auto repair shop and let a professional take a look at it.
However, not every mechanic is as trustworthy and effective as any other. Some shops may try to use their knowledge against you, convincing you to pay for repairs you don’t need or overcharging you for the repairs you need.
In order to protect yourself and avoid getting taken advantage of, here are a few things to look out for when at the repair shop and what you can do to make sure you pay the right price when fixing your car.
Scare Tactics
One of the most common ways for a mechanic to try to get more money out of you is by exaggerating the danger of the problems with your car. If a mechanic is telling you that they can’t believe you even made it into the shop, or that they wouldn’t even drive another mile in your car, they may be trying to scare you into paying for car repairs you don’t need.
Of course, sometimes your car is dangerous to drive, and the mechanic is telling the truth. If this is the case, they should be able to tell you concretely and specifically what the problem is. The scare tactic red flag mostly applies when the only thing the mechanic says is how risky it would be to drive.
Unwilling to Give a Written Estimate
When you’re getting work done on your car, it’s a good idea to get a written estimate beforehand so that you know what you’re paying for and so that the mechanic doesn’t charge you for work that you didn’t want to be done.
Reputable auto mechanics won’t have any problem giving you a piece of paper with a full breakdown of how much each repair procedure and replacement part costs. If they won’t do this, there might be something shady going on.
No Certification
North American auto mechanics have a few different routes to go to get certification. Reputable organizations that certify car mechanics include the ASE, AAA, or the ASA. These certifications ensure that the mechanics are qualified to work on your car and meet certain regulatory standards.
If your mechanic doesn’t have any kind of certification, that may be a sign to look elsewhere for help on your car.
