Whether you want total luxury or race performance, the tech-loaded AMG S 63 E-performance has you covered.
The world’s most powerful production S-class is upon us. The long name is (breathe in) the Mercedes-AMG S63 E-performance. It’s the only AMG S-class you can get (as in, no S 53 AMG). But that’s OK because it has gobs of power. 791 horsepower and an astronomical 1,055 lb/ft of torque. It’s quite literally insane. And it propels the S 63 to 60 in 3.3 seconds.
Like many S-class AMG that have come before, this one intricately combines incredible speed with the highest degree of luxury. As one would expect from the big Benz, you’re at no shortage of space. No shortage of comfort either. Move seats around as you would in prior S-class models, but this time, your seats can exercise with you, and even heat/cool with you. And if you get bored with the seats, you can dive into the amazing MBUX system interface for all of your entertainment needs.
Do all of that while taking just 3.2 seconds to achieve 60 miles per hour. AMG’s 4.0 liter twin turbo V8 is combined with a “permanently synchronous electric motor” which is part of what gives this this S 63 E-performance all of its… performance. Nine forward speeds and 4-Matic all wheel drive help in this endeavor, which AMG proudly wants you to use.
Part of that MBUX intervace includes use of a lap timer. Pick your track that you’re on, and you’ll be able to review lap data just like George Russell. Well, kinda. But AMG’s prowess here is built on the knowledge gained from the AMG GT and AMG ONE. So even though it is a bit like a fish out of water, it’s still a fast fish.
More importantly, the S 63 remains somewhat understated. Other manufacturers are going for shock-value when it comes to styling, especially a front grille. The AMG is no different, but somehow manages to do so while not appearing to try as hard to get attention.
The AMG cues are very evident, however. Big ducting in the front, and of course big tailpipes in the back hint at the performance. And that’s all you need. A hint. You don’t need to be shouted at. Unless you want to. Which at that point, just floor it.
