Indianapolis, IN – Students in the automotive program at Indianapolis Public Schools’ Arsenal Tech High School are restoring a 1951 Chevrolet Deluxe, a project fueled by their love for cars and aspirations for success after graduation.
Miguel Sanchez, a student, highlights the program’s impact: “I believe that I should develop a skill set that can help me further in life. One, you can help yourself, help your family, start a side hustle.”
Supported by partnerships with organizations like Carvana and inspired by figures such as NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson, this program exemplifies IPS’s commitment to real-world learning opportunities. While working on a 73-year-old car might seem outdated, the experience is invaluable, said Dennis Bailey, of the school’s two automotive instructors.
“Although today’s cars are more complex, the fundamental systems—engines, electrical, suspension, and brakes—are based on the same principles as older vehicles. Starting with this simpler version helps students build a solid foundation to tackle modern systems, which can seem intimidating at first.”
