You probably are familiar with the saying, “Familiarity breeds contempt.” To the folks who eschew red Chevelles and purple Challengers, they will understand, even when respectively equipped with an LS6 or Hemi. Their anathema comes in the form of the Malaise Era Invitational at the 2024 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals (MCACN), which spotlighted Camaros, Firebirds, and Trans Ams from the moment in time when decals added horsepower.

2022’s Malaise Era Muscle display

This aggregation of F-bodies has its origins from 2022 with the Malaise Era Muscle display, which was the big surprise of the year—who knew that low-horsepower performance poseurs could be so popular? Sure, MCACN features the rarest and most unusual muscle cars ever produced, but when was the last time you’ve seen a pristine 1977 Camaro Z/28? Trust me: when you see the cars below, it’s hard not to be impressed by how some manufacturers kept up with the times, and how the times shaped a particular style.

Of course, when it comes to the late-1970s, F-body Firebirds are King, especially the Trans Am from Smokey and the Bandit, but enthusiasts at MCACN don’t discriminate. Take a look at the examples above and below that demonstrate that a different kind of contempt can be flipped into something enjoyable.
