Just a few months after the debut of the concept, Mercedes-AMG has introduced the final production version of the PureSpeed.
From Concept to Reality
Mercedes-AMG has transformed its striking PureSpeed concept into a production reality just six months after its debut. This radical, roofless, and windshield-free speedster builds on the foundation of the SL63 but takes open-air driving to an extreme. Limited to only 250 units as part of Mercedes’ elite Mythos series, the PureSpeed features a signature Formula 1-style “halo” that divides the cockpit while echoing the protective structure found in modern race cars. Its design also draws inspiration from the legendary 1955 300SLR, evident in the twin humps behind the seats.
Performance-Driven Engineering
Beneath its aerodynamically sculpted body lies AMG’s formidable 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, producing 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent through a nine-speed automatic gearbox to a 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. This potent setup launches the PureSpeed from 0-62 mph in a blistering 3.6 seconds, with a top speed of nearly 196 mph. AMG’s advanced technology suite includes hydraulic roll control, rear-wheel steering, and adaptive suspension, ensuring unparalleled agility and stability.
Aerodynamic Mastery
Aerodynamics play a central role in the PureSpeed’s design. The front fascia channels airflow with precision, while an active rear spoiler automatically adjusts to five angles based on speed, cornering forces, and steering input. A vented hood further streamlines air movement over the car. Underneath, a specially designed underbody enhances downforce while reducing drag. An active winglet beneath the nose can raise or lower by up to 1.6 inches at speeds over 50 mph, creating a Venturi effect for extra grip and precise steering.
Structural Integrity Meets Iconic Design
The PureSpeed’s F1-style halo, constructed from high-strength steel, serves both structural and aerodynamic functions. In case of an emergency, hidden deployable roll bars behind the seats provide additional protection. Its distinctive red-and-black livery pays homage to the 1924 Mercedes Targa Florio race car, which famously won the Italian event after being painted red to blend in with local competitors and avoid interference from passionate spectators.
Exquisite Interior Details
The interior is adorned in Crystal White and Black leather, featuring AMG Performance seats with custom stitching designed to mimic airflow patterns. Carbon-fiber trim enhances the motorsport aesthetic, while a unique IWC Schaffhausen analog clock appears to float atop the dashboard. Despite being an open-air car, comfort is prioritized with heated seats, deep-pile AMG floor mats, and a 15-speaker Burmester sound system.
Racing Tech for the Road
Mercedes-AMG’s attention to detail extends even to custom-made aerodynamic helmets included with the PureSpeed. Equipped with built-in speakers and an intercom system, these helmets allow seamless communication between driver and passenger, even at high speeds. The system also integrates with the car’s infotainment system, supporting hands-free phone calls and music streaming.
Pricing and Availability
Mercedes-AMG has yet to announce pricing for the PureSpeed, though industry insiders expect it to far exceed the SL63’s $180,000 starting price. With only 250 units planned and none road-legal in the U.S., this limited-edition model is likely to be a collector’s dream. Enthusiasts eager to experience a modern homage to open-top racing history should act quickly before this engineering marvel is spoken for.
