A special version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class graced The City of Genius show in Shanghai last October 19. The three-pointed star marque collaborated with Italian fashion brand Moncler to produce a limited edition series of the iconic SUV called “Project G-Class Past II Future.”

The Mercedes-Benz x Moncler Collaboration

According to Mercedes-Benz USA, the rare G-Class was part of its “Past Forward. Where the Future is Driven by the Past” campaign with Moncler. The partners transformed the luxury vehicle into a piece that resonated with the signature works of Japanese art director NIGO.

For this purpose, the German luxury automaker and fashion company chose the G 450 d and G 550 as their canvas. They transformed the SUV to look like its restored 90s models, complete with a foldable roof, period-specific equipment and wheel designs, and urban-style upholstery. Meanwhile, it only offers 20 samples of the car for buyers, with deliveries scheduled to begin in April 2025.

Influences for the Limited Edition G-Class

NIGO explained that he chose the 90s era as a specific inspiration for his work. It’s because he considers it the peak of cultural innovation of the modern age.

The Japanese art director fused the influences of the period with contemporary street style to deliver a gender-neutral fashion collection. Besides the bespoke G-Class, the show also featured special clothing and accessories carrying the 90s vibe.

“For me, the 90s were among the most influential decades from a cultural and creative standpoint,” said NIGO. “Electronic music and the hip-hop scene arose as a new expression of urban character.”

“I wanted to integrate that vibe and energy into the design of the Project G-Class Past II Future by interpreting that legacy for a new contemporary era,” the art director added.

The Shanghai event also showcased popular music artists and figures from various industries, including A$AP Rocky, Willow Smith, Edward Enninful, FRGMT, and Gilga Farm, among others.
