Three weeks ago, Mercedes announced its H1 2024 sales, with sales in the Top End segment falling 22%. We now have sales results for the Mercedes S-Class and EQS, which are down 25 and 30%, respectively.

In the first six months of 2024, sales in the Top-End segment that includes the luxury models – the Maybach, S-Class, GLS, AMG, and G-Class – have fallen significantly by no less than 22%.

As a result, Mercedes sold 136,900 units in the Top-End segment in 1H 2024, 22% less than in the same period in 2023. The main cause of this decline is the poor performance of the Mercedes S-Class and Mercedes EQS luxury limousines.

The fact that sales of the Mercedes EQS are falling is not a surprise, but the result achieved by the Mercedes S-Class is unexpected. In the first six months of 2024, Mercedes sold only 28,100 S-Class, 25% less than the first half of 2023. In the US and Europe, the drop is even more drastic, by 30%. Mercedes officials say the drop is in line with the evolution of the S-Class lifecycle, with the current-generation W223 almost four years old, launching on September 2, 2020.

Sales of the Mercedes EQS have also fallen even further. Just 7,000 EQS units were sold by Mercedes in the first six months of 2024, which is half of the 14,100 units sold in the same period in 2023.

Mercedes officials are hoping for a rebound in sales in the top-end segment by introducing the new electric Mercedes G-Class, especially the new AMG versions of the CLE and E-Class and the facelifted EQS.
