The electric motors in the new Lamborghini Temerario and Revuelto models come from the English company YASA, which has been acquired by Mercedes.
With the new generation of the Temerario and Revuelto supersport models, Lamborghini is entering the age of electrification. The two models have three electric motors in addition to their V8 turbocharged and V12 naturally aspirated engines. They come from the British firm YASA, which is 100% owned by Mercedes. The YASA engines will also be used in future AMG models based on the new AMG.EA dedicated sport electric platform.
The YASA engines were developed specifically for the Lamborghini Temerario and Revuelto. In the case of the Temerario, two electric motors at the front axle develop 110 kW (150 PS) each, and one at the rear develops 110 kW (150 PS) and 300 Nm. Together with the 799 PS, 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 engine, the total power output is 920 PS. Lamborghini Temerario’s YASA axial-flow front axle motors feature compact dimensions and low weight while delivering high power and torque density. The two front-axle electric motors in the Lamborghini Temerario weigh only 17.3 kg, have a diameter of only 30 cm, and are only 7 cm thick.
In the Revuelto, the powertrain system is similar, but a 6.5-liter, 825 PS naturally aspirated V12 engine works in the center position instead of the turbocharged V8. Thus, at the front axle, there is an electric motor at each wheel with 110 kW (150 PS) and 350 Nm, and at the rear, above the V12 engine, a third electric motor with 110 kW (150 PS) and 150 Nm is located. The Lamborghini Revuelto’s YASA axial-flow front-axle axial-flow motors weigh 18.5 kg each.
Mercedes acquired 100% of YASA in 2022 but YASA engines are still produced at the company’s headquarters at the University of Oxford, UK. “This is just the beginning of our partnership with Lamborghini,” says YASA Managing Director Graeme Cook. “We want to continue to push the boundaries of technology and challenge design norms.”
The first car to receive a high-performance YASA electric motor was the Ferrari SF90 Stradale in 2019 followed by the Ferrari 296 GTB. McLaren also uses YASA engines.
In the future, YASA plans to develop electric motors with up to 300 PS and a low weight of only 7 kg. This means that a YASA motor will be lighter than a brake disk and can be placed right inside the wheel without increasing the rotating mass.
