The 2025 Ram HD trucks see several improvements including a new 6.7-liter Cummins diesel, a new transmission, new looks and several new features — such as 2.4 kW on-board power available in the bed.

New Cummins engine

Sharing the same 6.7-liter displacement, the new inline 6-cylinder turbocharged Cummins diesel now produces 1,075 pound-feet of torque on every trim level, replacing the two-torque-output strategy of the prior generation with higher- and lower-torque options.

Ram has also focused on reliability and serviceability in several ways. First, it moved the oil filter to an easy-to-access spot on top of the engine and replaced the controversial older fuel pumps with a new CP5 fuel pump. It also uses improved intake port geometry for top-feed injectors, top-load lubrication and integrated fuel filters.

Ram had used a Bosch CP4.2 fuel pump but backtracked in 2021 and then recalled all the 2019-2021 HD trucks to go back to the CP3 fuel pump due to metal shavings created when using U.S. diesel fuel. European diesel fuel is different and doesn’t cause the metal shavings. These metal shavings can cause major damage to the fuel lines and many other components leading to repair bills ranging from $6,000-$10,000 and more.

Ram also moved back to glow plugs for this generation of the Cummins engines. A redesigned block and head, robust heavy-duty pistons, new performance intake manifold, a new turbo, larger intake/exhaust valves for improved port flow and a higher-pressure fuel system are also highlights of this new engine.

The engine is also quieter than prior models with Ram’s Doug Killian, chief vehicle synthesis manager, said Ram took out some of the “whine” and left the good noise. This is through the use of helical transmission gears according to Killian.

They have mated this engine to a new TorqueFlite HD 8-speed transmission from ZF, the same company they use for their light-duty trucks.

Also, a 3.42 rear-axle ratio is now standard providing better efficiency at higher speeds while still towing 36,610 pounds efficiently. This reduction from the maximum towing setup of the 4.10 rear axle ratio is thanks to the two additional gears in the 8-speed transmission versus the 6-speed automatic. Basically, Ram engineers can achieve the same benefits of a lower rear-axle ratio through setting up the two additional gears when towing.

Finally, the Cummins diesel is faster with a 0-to-60-MPH time at 6.9 seconds, allowing you to get the load moving much quicker off the line.

With nearly 70% of Ram customers opting for the Cummins diesel, these improvements are critical for its customer base.

There is also a 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 gas engine available that produces 405 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. Maximum payload for trucks equipped with this engine is 7,590 pounds, and maximum gooseneck and conventional hitch maximum trailer weight ratings for 2025 are 36,610 pounds and 23,000 pounds, respectively.

2025 Ram HD trucks exterior updates

For 2025, the Ram 2500 and 3500 features a redesigned grille, standard LED headlights and taillights for a bold and heroic presence.

Also, the RamBox cargo management system continues to offer lockable, weatherproof storage with enhanced functionality. An on-board power inverter provides up to 2.4 kW of power via two bed-mounted outlets.

Also, the PTO setup on chassis cab trucks has been improved to operate on both sides of the truck. You can also power attachments through the infotainment screen.

Finally, there are new wheel designs and interior materials in the various trim levels.

Interior technology

The 2025 Ram HD trucks feature the Uconnect 5 infotainment system with options for a 12-inch or a new 14.5-inch touchscreen display, a new 10.25-inch passenger screen and a fully digital 12.3-inch gauge cluster.

Also, Ram has moved to offering an electronic column shifter as the standard shifter setup throughout its lineup. This is beneficial for work trucks like those plowing snow.

New connectivity features include dual wireless phone charging and a digital rearview mirror with tow mode for improved visibility.

Safety and driver assistance features

Standard safety features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and front/rear park assist. Optional technologies include drowsy driver detection, traffic sign recognition, active lane management and a 360-degree surround-view camera with trailer reverse guidance.

Trailering updates

The 2025 Ram HD trucks offer new trailer technologies, including Trailer Reverse Steering Control and Trailer-Tow Pages, which provide comprehensive trailer monitoring through the Uconnect system. An auxiliary exterior camera and power telescoping trailer tow mirrors enhance towing visibility.

Availability & pricing

The 2025 Ram Heavy Duty lineup includes Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, Rebel, Power Wagon, Limited Longhorn and Limited models. They come in several bed and cabs configurations including a long bed dually setup.

Pricing starts at $47,560 for the Ram 2500 and $48,565 for the Ram 3500, with trucks scheduled to arrive in dealerships in Q1 2025.

All trucks are built in Saltillo, Mexico.

Our take

The Cummins remains a top reason why customers go to Ram trucks, and these new trucks don’t disappoint with upgrades. The relocation of the oil filter, new 8-speed transmission, the on-board power and the maximum torque output throughout the lineup should be big hits with those buyers.
