Pick of the Day: 2001 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Last year, I wrote a story about two of Pontiac’s most popular performance cars, the Firebird Trans Am and the G8. Both vehicles were engineered to “drive excitement” for buyers, and even though the Pontiac division was dissolved after 2010, the passion lives on among enthusiasts of the brand.

The Pick of the Day is a 2001 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6 listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Kulpmont, Pennsylvania. (Click the link to view the listing)

“Car is all stock and in immaculate condition,” the listing begins. “Manual transmission, new PA state inspection, brand new battery, runs and drives as it should.”

Even when standing still, this bright red Firebird Trans Am evokes a sense of speed. As with other Pontiac vehicles of the era, it has an abundance of aerodynamic flair including the “Ram Air” induction system as identified by the scripted logos on the hood. The tail end is rounded out by a sculpted wing, a full-width smoked taillight, a dual exhaust system, and WS6 badging.

The WS6 package, by the way, brought a host of upgrades worth noting. Besides the Ram Air intake and hood, WS6-equipped cars got a firmer suspension, a 32mm front sway bar, a 19mm rear sway bar, and unique 17-inch five-spoke wheels. This baby was built to handle.

On the interior, the cockpit is well-kept as one would expect for a car with only 34,464 miles on the odometer. The seller says, “No cracks on the door panels, no tears or stains on the interior.” The two-plus-two seating arrangement offers leather-trimmed buckets up front. I’m a fan of the built-in stereo equalizer – Pontiacs of this era were known for having a lot of control buttons, after all.

The heart of the beast is a 5.7-liter LS1 V8 which was rated at 325 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque with the included Ram Air system. Armed with this combo, the Trans Am WS6 could scoot to 60 miles per hour in just five seconds, and its top speed was factory-limited to 162 miles per hour.

One of Pontiac’s magazine ads for the Trans Am said, “Trans Am exists for one reason: To launch you into another dimension. Strap into a Trans Am and step into the future. Because technology should move you.”

If you are ready to launch into another dimension, the ticket price will be $22,500. And for an added bonus, the asking price includes an indoor car cover.
