Polestar Automotive is a premium Swedish electric performance vehicle manufacturer that was established in 2017 by Volvo Cars and Geely Holding. The start-up brand has dealers in 27 international markets around the world, where the Polestar 2 sedan is the volume spinner. The brand has confirmed the Polestar 3, Polestar 4, Polestar 5, and Polestar 6 models that will follow by 2026, as it targets annual sales of 290,000 units by 2025.

Polestar 7 to replace the Polestar 2

The first time that the Polestar 7 was brought up was during a brief exchange between Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath and Automotive News Europe in November 2022. While back then we didn’t have much to add, we’ve learned now that the Polestar 7 is a replacement of the Polestar 2, planned for a market release in 2027.

Polestar 7 not bound by the 2’s legacy

Speaking to Autocar UK in April 2024, Ingenlath said the company has decided not to replace the 2 with a similar vehicle at the end of its lifecycle. While the positioning of the Polestar 7 would be comparable to the current model, as its entry-level car, the company won’t be “boxed” into a concept of replacing it with the same type of vehicle.

Likely to switch to the SEA platform

While Ingenlath didn’t hand out more information, it’s a given that the Polestar 7 would switch to the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) from parent company Geely which has multiple versions, and underpins models like the Smart #1, Volvo EX30, Zeekr X, and the Polestar 4. By 2027, the SEA is expected to have evolved, capable of supporting much higher specifications. Customers would expect about 300 miles of range (EPA), 200 kW+ of DC charging capacity, and a 0-62 mph time of under 5 seconds in the performance variant, in the case of a Polestar 7 BST.

Could be made in Europe

Currently, all Polestar vehicles are manufactured at the brand’s primary production facility in Chengdu, China, with Volvo Cars’ facility in Ridgeville, South Carolina (USA), to begin Polestar production this year. In his conversation with Automotive News Europe, Ingenlath stated that the brand is wanting to commence production in Europe as well. At around the same timeframe, the CEO expects the Polestar 7 to make its international debut in 2027, which we now know is 2027.

TopElectricSUV says

Polestar is a bold automaker that isn’t hesitant to make significant changes. Midway through its lifecycle, the company decided to alter the drivetrain layout of the Polestar 2. Having also experienced the Polestar 3, I think the company is quickly adapting and understanding what buyers want from EVs, especially those who are on the fence about making the switch.

In the case of the expected Polestar 7, I think that being an affordable, must-have SUV is something that would keep prospective customers enthralled.
