Most people I know love the Honda Civic Type R for its track performance and agility on winding roads. However, it still leaves something to be desired in certain areas, particularly in terms of everyday usability. Then there’s the 2024 Acura Integra Type S, which aims to blend the Type R’s performance with improved daily driving comfort and practicality. With an MSRP of $51,800, let’s find out what you get.
The 2024 Acura Integra Type S features a recalibrated 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder VTEC engine that is fundamentally the same as the one in the Honda Civic Type R. However, the engine in the Integra Type S has been fine-tuned to deliver 320 horsepower, offering slightly more midrange torque under part-throttle conditions. While both engines require 93 octane fuel for peak performance, we found it performs well with 91 octane fuel too. This engine’s smooth power delivery and refined overall character distinguish the Integra Type S as a flexible option for all types of driving. It achieves 0-60 mph in just 5.1 seconds and returns fuel economy ratings of 21 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, for a combined 24 mpg.
In my opinion, the Integra Type S adopts a more refined, yet aggressive, design compared to the Civic Type R. It looks stunning, especially in the Platinum White paint ours is finished in. The front grille has a cool sense of motion, culminating in a sharp point. Riding on 19-inch alloy wheels, it features Jewel Eye LED headlights and heated powered side mirrors. The wide fender flares keep that sporty vibe, which I appreciate. The vehicle confidently asserts its identity. A carbon fiber lip spoiler replaces the Civic Type R’s prominent wing, while subtly integrated air intakes provide effective cooling for the engine and brakes.
Inside the Integra Type S you are greeted with a luxurious cabin. It includes a 9-inch infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a hard leather-wrapped steering wheel, and perforated Ultrasuede seats that provide comfort and support. Other amenities include a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and heated front seats. Acura claims enhanced sound insulation results in a quieter ride, though I found road noise to be obnoxiously loud for rear passengers. However, the standard 16-speaker ELS Studio 3D audio system delivers excellent sound quality, which compensates for this. The rear seat space is notably tight but still comfortable. Despite the lack of rear AC vents, the vehicle cools down quickly using the front vents, which alleviates concerns about comfort.
Driving the Integra Type S is exceptional, thanks to its smooth shifting, excellent handling, and impressive grip. The recalibrated engine provides strong acceleration out of corners, aided by a helical limited-slip front differential and dual-axis strut front suspension. While sharing many components with the Type R, including suspension, brakes, and tires, the Integra Type S distinguishes itself with tuned adaptive dampers that offer a smoother ride over rough surfaces due to reduced rebound damping. The minimal turbo delay and responsive power delivery make for an ear grinning experience, countering common issues found in turbocharged vehicles.
The Acura Integra Type S stands out as a desirable choice for those looking for a sporty yet sophisticated vehicle that excels in both performance and everyday usability. We sure had fun with it. Despite its premium price tag, the Integra Type S impresses with its buttery smooth manual transmission and comprehensive features.
