Mercedes has started the compact class refreshes with the third-generation CLA, which is based on the new MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform and will have electric and mild hybrid propulsion. The new-generation Mercedes GLB, GLA, and CLA Shooting brake will follow.
As announced, Mercedes has dropped the specific names EQA and EQB, and the electric models will be called GLA and GLB, like the combustion-engined models.
After Mercedes unveiled the first official photos of the new camouflaged Mercedes CLA, the first photos of the upcoming Mercedes GLB, also camouflaged, have surfaced on the internet.
Although the bodywork of the future Mercedes GLB is hidden by extensive camouflage, a few details can be distinguished. The compact-class SUV retains the seven-seat option and the squared-off body shape but the front end is more rounded to achieve a better Cx. The headlights have daytime running lights in the shape of the Mercedes logo, similar to the Mercedes CLA Concept unveiled in fall 2023 at the Munich Motor Show. At the rear, an LED bar will connect the two taillights.
The interior will be similar to that of the new CLA with a wide and narrow display that spans the width of the dashboard.
The electric Mercedes GLB, which will replace the EQB, will have two versions, both with 800V technology: one with rear-wheel drive, a 272 PS motor, and an LFP battery with a net 58 kWh capacity, and one with all-wheel drive, two motors delivering 381 PS in total and a Li-Ion battery with a net 85 kWh capacity.
Due to the SUV shape that generates a lower Cx, the ranges of the two GLB versions will be lower than the CLA.
There will also be mild hybrid versions that combine the new 1.5-liter four-cylinder 1.5-liter thermal engine with a 27 PS electric motor placed between the thermal engine and the 8-speed automatic transmission. The 1.5-liter Miller-cycle engine will deliver 136, 163, and 190 PS. The electric motor is powered by a 1.3 kWh Li-Ion battery. The Mercedes GLB will be available with front- or all-wheel drive.
The Mercedes GLB will be available from 2026. Until then, the Mercedes CLA electric will debut in 2025, and the Mercedes CLA mild hybrid will follow in 2026. In the pipeline are the new-generation Mercedes CLA Shooting brake and GLA, while the A and B-Class will have no successors.
