The Toyota 4Runner has been on sale in the U.S. since the mid-1980s and will enter its sixth generation in 2024 as a 2025 model-year SUV. The SUVs also had attractive 90s styling and comfortable interiors, but some second-generation models suffered massive frame rust issues that led to a recall in 2010, with buybacks initiated if the problems were bad enough.
The Nissan Pathfinder got a generational update for the 1996 model year, giving it a respectable V6 engine, and later in its life, it gained the now-well-known VQ 3.5-liter V6. Nissan’s luxury arm Infiniti also got a version of the SUV with a plusher interior and more refined styling. While this was going on, Mitsubishi also had a player in the game. The Montero, also known as the Pajero or Shogun, depending on the market, brought legendary off-road capability and Dakar Rally-bred performance that made it a desirable alternative.
Finally, we can’t ignore the Toyota Land Cruiser. The iconic SUV is one of the toughest and most desirable off-roaders anywhere, sporting a more dedicated and capable configuration than the 4Runner. It’s equally as hard to find in decent condition today, with many examples commanding extreme prices in decent condition.
