Remember that recall we reported on last month? The one that involved debris in the 2022-2023 Toyota Tundra engines? Yeah, the one that had Tundra owners in a pickle because dealers didn’t want their trade-ins. Well, Toyota now has a fix, and it involves replacing the engine in all vehicles involved, which covers about 100k Toyota Tundras and Lexus LXs.

Recall recap

In essence, the 2022-2023 Lexus LX and Toyota Tundra engines could run rough and eventually fail because machining debris was not cleared when they were produced. Affected engines were built both in Japan and Huntsville, Alabama.

The engine in question: The turbocharged V-6.

The investigation into the problem began in March of 2022, and a voluntary recall was issued in May of 2024. We have a detailed timeline of the investigation, but the end result is engine replacement.

When the recall notice was issued, there was no known fix, which is what caused the problem with dealer trade-ins. Now, according to an Automotive News article, owners will be notified of the engine replacement later this month, and it will be done at no cost to the owners.

Toyota told Automotive News that owners would receive a loaner or rental vehicle while the repairs were being made, which is expected to take between 13 to 21 hours. In dealer speak, that could be anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks.

Also, Toyota posted a press release confirming it will be a full engine replacement.

The bottom line

At least there’s a fix? Obviously, this is not what new owners want to hear. But on the upside, Toyota finally has a plan in place to fix its vehicles – and keep owners happy by providing a loaner.
