One of the unsung heroes of your Mercedes-Benz is the cooling system. Without it, your engine would overheat, making it function less efficiently. By feeding water and coolant in the correct combination through your engine, your Mercedes cooling system counters the heat generated by the combustion reaction that powers your car to keep everything running smoothly and efficiently.

When something goes wrong with your vehicle, having a solid understanding of your Mercedes cooling parts can help you fix your car as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, not everyone knows how the different features of their cooling system work together to lower the engine’s temperature. This Mercedes cooling parts guide will help you overcome that gap in your knowledge and learn how the different parts of your cooling system work to keep your engine running in the best condition!

Radiator

Coolant is a specially formulated liquid that is mixed with water and runs through your Mercedes engine to cool it down. As the engine produces heat (the combustion reaction averages 2,000°F), the coolant, in turn, heats up as well. Hot coolant won’t help cool down the engine, so it has to pass back through the radiator to cool back down. The radiator cools things down by exposing the coolant to the maximum amount of surface area possible by splitting the main tube into core tubes and then into cooling fins. This increased surface area makes it so that as air passes through the radiator, it rapidly lowers the temperature of the coolant, thus preparing it to cycle back through the cooling system and back to the engine.

Water Pump

The coolant flows through hoses back and forth between the radiator and the engine via the propulsion of the water pump—the water pump functions like a heart that pumps blood throughout the body. Usually, it does this by spinning around, using centrifugal force to push the liquid to the outside of the pump where it can run out. The water pump is turned by a belt connected to the car’s crankshaft.

Expansion Tank

Many coolant systems use an expansion tank that holds extra coolant when needed. As coolant is heated up, it expands, which increases pressure within the engine’s cooling system. If this pressure is too great, it could cause pops or leaks, so the expansion tank has air inside of it which serves as a “cushion” as the coolant expands.

Hoses

If your Mercedes’ water pump is like a heart, then hoses are like veins and arteries, carrying coolant throughout the cooling system. Whether they run from the radiator to the engine or the engine to the radiator, they must be attached tightly, leak-free, and allow coolant to flow without being contaminated.

Maintaining Your Mercedes Cooling System

Your cooling system won’t function properly unless all these parts are in good shape. If your cooling system isn’t running correctly, neither will your engine. Having an experienced and knowledgeable parts supplier like Adsitco makes keeping the parts of your cooling system in good shape easy! Our massive online parts catalog is bound to have whatever you need to keep your Mercedes in tip-top shape.
