The VW ID.7 GTX Tourer is the German automaker’s electric all-rounder, combining the practicality of a station wagon with the eco-friendliness of an electric powertrain. Tuned for performance and all-weather capability and styled with hints of a shooting brake, it’s not your ordinary long-roofed car, though. At the 2024 Paris Motor Show this week, I got a chance to fully explore the new EV in person. Here are my first impressions:
Design
The VW ID.7 GTX Tourer features a futuristic yet elegant exterior, along with signature sporty touches to highlight its performance focus. A more muscular front bumper featuring vertical daytime running lights composed of two LED triangles mimicking an arrowhead shape and a special air intake grille featuring a honeycomb design and gloss black finish lend its front-end an exclusive appearance.
On the sides, gloss black ORVM housing and gloss black GTX lettering on the front doors add to the sporty styling. However, the exclusive 20-inch Skagen wheels are the main distinguishing feature from the regular VW ID.7. Customers can upgrade to the 21-inch Mataró wheels as well for a more imposing road presence. The rocker panels also carry a gloss black finish.
At the rear, the VW logo lights up in red, instantly giving away the car as a GTX model. A honeycomb grille reappears here, in the lower part of the bumper, followed by a narrow red reflector strip and then a diffuser. Lastly, there’s also a gloss black GTX inscription below the license plate. The roof, including the roof arches, also features the same dark finish.
Interior
The VW ID.7 GTX Tourer’s interior exudes sportiness with several styling changes from the standard car. Needless to say, it’s an all-black cabin, but with red elements laid throughout for contrast.
The front seats feature GTX inscription in red color, and so does the steering wheel, but in a chrome look. Red stitching on the seat covers and steering wheel and red piping on the dashboard and seat covers complete the GTX-specific look.
My experience in the VW ID.7 GTX Touring
I am six foot tall and during my experience in the VW ID.7 GTX Touring at the 2024 Paris Motor Show, I found its interior comfortable and practical. The front seats offered excellent back and under-thigh support. Despite the low roofline, the headroom was decent, and I felt the large dimmable panoramic glass roof made the cabin seem more spacious. The large windscreens and the expansive greenhouse provide excellent outward visibility.
The layout is simple, featuring a small digital instrument cluster and a large central touchscreen that controls everything from climate settings to navigation. I would have liked more conventional, physical controls, though. The piano black accents on the dashboard and center console look sleek, though they may be prone to fingerprints.
In the rear, I had plenty of knee room and decent under-thigh support. While headroom was average, the adjustable headrests and nearly flat floor made it comfortable for three adults. Rear seat amenities include seat ventilation, air vents, USB ports, and an armrest with cup holders.
Specifications
The VW ID.7 GTX Tourer employs two motors, the 80 kW (107 hp) AKA150 asynchronous (ASM) unit at the front and the 210 kW (282 hp) APP550 permanent magnet synchronous (PSM) unit at the rear. With a total of 250 kW (335 hp) available at disposal, 0 to 62 mph comes in just 5.5 seconds. Flat out, you can drive at up to 112 mph in the electric station wagon.
An 86 kWh (net) battery pack powers the motors, and it supports charging at up to 200 kW. You can charge it from 10 to 80% through a DC charger as quickly as 26 minutes. Through an 11 kW AC charger, a 0-100% charging session takes nine hours. With the battery fully charged, the electric station wagon can travel up to 357 miles, as per WLTP.
The VW ID.7 GTX Tourer offers 605 liters (21.4 cu. ft.) of cargo space, which you can expand to 1,714 liters (60.5 cu. ft.) by folding the rear seat. You can use its cavernous luggage area to load not only groceries or a pram but also adventure equipment like surfboards, a mountain bike, and skis. The electric station wagon has a braked towing capacity of 1,400 kg (3,086 lbs.).
Price
The VW ID.7 GTX Tourer retails at EUR 75,000 (USD 81,502) in France.
