I got to demo the VW Tayron this afternoon at the 2024 Paris Motor Show where it is making its show premiere. It’s important to note that the U.S. version, which will be launched as the new VW Tiguan, will be its long-wheelbase configuration. VW of America has also confirmed that the new U.S.-spec Tiguan would differ significantly from the Tayron in terms of design, powertrain options, and features. Further details regarding the U.S.-spec Tiguan will be released later this year.

With that info out of the way, here’s what I make of the VW Tayron.

Design

Positioned above the Tiguan in Europe, the VW Tayron is a mid-size SUV that oozes practicality. Its athletic look comes from sharp lines and LED headlights, with an illuminated Volkswagen badge on both the front and rear. The Tayron measures around 4.8 meters in length, providing a better road presence than the T-Roc or Tiguan.

The robust design is complemented by a full-length LED crossbar at the rear and its coupe-like silhouette. Optional seven-seat capability makes it versatile for big families. The Tayron’s bold exterior is adorned by its sleek roofline, aerodynamic enhancements, and 17-inch wheels. The illuminated Volkswagen logo and sophisticated light design complete the overall appeal of the vehicle.

Interior

Inside, the Tayron looks to create a premium impression with high-quality materials and advanced technology. The wraparound dashboard, combined with ambient lighting and ArtVelours Eco microfiber upholstery, creates a nice atmosphere. Available in five- or seven-seat configurations, the Tayron offers plenty of space for passengers, with up to 885 liters of luggage space. The large 32-centimeter diagonal infotainment screen integrates with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The multifunctional driving experience control allows for easy customization of driving profiles, including 4MOTION all-wheel drive settings. Standard features like three-zone automatic air conditioning, a digital instrument cluster, and background lighting add to car’s usefulness. Optional leather upholstery, a Harman-Kardon sound system, and a panoramic sunroof are ideal for customers who frequently do long journeys.

My experience inside the VW Tayron

Getting in and out of the Volkswagen Tayron at the Paris Motor Show was effortless, even with my six-foot frame. Once inside, the cabin felt incredibly airy, thanks to the large greenhouse and glass roof, which allows plenty of natural light. The digital cluster was neatly arranged, and the large screen should be more than enough for most users. Ambient lighting, with blue accents along the dashboard and door panels, enhances the interior’s aesthetic.

The seats were a pleasant surprise—well-cushioned, with excellent lumbar and thigh support. The side bolstering and dual-tone Alcantara-like material with white piping added a premium touch. In the back, the entry was easy, and there was ample space for two six-foot passengers, though seating three could be a squeeze. The sliding second-row seats offer flexibility, but the third row is really only suitable for kids. Overall, the Tayron offers a spacious alternative to the Tiguan, especially for those needing more room.

Specifications

The Tayron is available with a range of powertrains, with a focus on hybrid technology. The mild-hybrid version features a 110 kW engine (147 hp), while two plug-in hybrid models (eHybrid) offer a system power of 150 kW (201 hp) and 200 kW (268 hp). These plug-in hybrids use a 19.7 kWh battery, delivering an electric range of over 100 kilometers (62 miles), making them suitable for everyday driving with no emissions. Note that the range is assumed to be in the WLTP metric.

The battery can be charged using a 50 kW DC charger, and it supports AC charging at up to 11 kW for more convenient home charging. All engines come paired with a direct shift gearbox (DSG) for smooth, efficient performance. The Tayron is also designed for towing, with 4MOTION all-wheel drive models capable of pulling up to 2.5 tonnes.

Price & Release Date

In Germany, the Tayron is now available for pre-order, starting at EUR 45,475 (USD 49,699) for the Life trim, which includes a 110 kW (147 hp) mild-hybrid powertrain.

TopElectricSUV says

The three-row VW Tayron is more spacious and practical than the Tiguan Allspace, making it a better alternative for European families and individuals who travel with plenty of kit. A plug-in hybrid system that delivers an impressive electric range and allows customers to use it as an EV daily is another highlight that’s bound to draw interest when the variant comes available.
