There are certain things you know you must preserve and hold on to, such as old family photographs or your grandfather’s watch that you inherited from your dad. It’s harder to know when to do that with cars. Most of them are just machines to be used for commuting until the cost of repairs is more than the car’s value. But then there are those models which people somehow know are worth keeping in great shape from the start. This 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Super Cobra Jet is one of them. Since new, it’s only been driven 2,612 miles.

Usually, specimens like this are hermetically sealed in garages. Luckily, this Mach 1 is going to be available at the GAA Classic Cars auction that runs July 25-27 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Just look for Lot # ST0082 on Saturday, July 27 and get your bid in.

Not only did the previous owner(s) of this Mach 1 keep the miles to a minimum, but they also kept the build sheet. Someone even paid for a 2024 Deluxe Marti Report that details this car’s factory configuration and list of equipment. According to the document, it was ordered with Acapulco Blue paint, a black-out hood treatment, and black vinyl high-back bucket seats, and built on February 21, 1969.

That’s an attractive combination, but what really makes this Mustang stand out is its engine and the associated hardware. The original buyer opted for the Cobra Jet 428ci V8 with Ram Air and a four-speed close-ratio manual transmission. Selecting that engine enabled them to tick the box for the Drag Pack. That transformed the Cobra Jet into a Supra Cobra Jet and added an engine oil cooler, cap-screw connecting rods, and an upgraded crankshaft and flywheel, according to the Mustang 428 Cobra Jet Registry. In addition, the Drag Pack could be paired with either a 3.91:1 or 4.30:1 Traction-Lok rear end; this Mach 1 sends power to the street through the latter ratio.

Ford built this Mustang to go as fast as possible on the drag strip. We have a feeling it will go across GAA’s auction block with the same intensity. If you want to be the person who wins it, drink plenty of coffee because you’ll need to be quick to keep up with and top your rival bidders.
