A wrecked Mercedes-AMG GT is a worthy recipient of a rebuild– even with Temu parts from China.
YouTuber Chris Slix bought a wrecked Mercedes-AMG GT with the intent of resurrecting it. It’s something many car fanatics dream of, but Chris went for it. Still, after his team tore into the crashed performance car, they discovered the need for welding and structural repair. Fortunately, after the repairs, the AMG GT was ready to look the part.
However, rather than spending $200,000 on a Black Series body kit, Chris decided to opt for parts from China via Temu. He was delighted to find that the kit cost around 1/15th of the Mercedes-Benz equipment. That said, the panels took weeks of painstaking fitment to get right and painted. Beyond simple paint, Chris opted for wet-application paint protection to safeguard his “pride and joy.”
After the body and paint were in the bag, Chris wanted to treat himself to a very special birthday gift. Of course, what 30th birthday would be complete without a bit of a gift? To celebrate the occasion, the YouTuber treated himself to a set of custom Wheel Mania two-piece wheels. “This is the most expensive wheel I’ve put on a car.” Then Chris dropped a pearl. “It doesn’t matter if you don’t like it. It’s my car.” Good call.
Still, the wide-open wheels revealed some superficial rust on the brakes that Chris didn’t love. Incidentally, after cleaning up the brakes, he found a rattle that he asserts “would drive him mad” on a long trip. However, after tracking down loose suspension links and a disconnected exhaust clamp, they were back in business.
Rattles, Shakes & Irritations Aside, the Mercedes-AMG GT Is Road Ready
Chris Slicks’ intent for the budget-ish rebuild is to take it on a lengthy road trip. Naturally, Chris wanted to make sure that he had the right kit to take on his incipient road trip. Consequently, he bought spare components like a solitary spark plug and coils.
As you might imagine, the AMG GT offers more space than diminutive sports cars. However, Chris wants to take vital cargo like spare parts, an emergency kit, and loads of camera equipment. That, and he wants a passenger in the seat next to him. It’s certainly going to be a trip to remember.
