A 2022-2023 Ford Bronco Sport recall over gasoline leaks isn’t satisfactory to Federal Investigators who are demanding more information.

Ford Bronco Sport recall over leaking gas

The April 15, 2024 recall was meant to fix nearly 34,000 Ford Bronco Sport SUVs with 1.5-liter gasoline engines. These SUVs had fuel injectors that could crack allowing gas or vapor to leak near hot engine parts that can cause fires, fuel odors, and an increased risk of injuries according to an ABCNews.com story.

Ford’s fix for this problem was to install a drain tube to send gas away from the hot surfaces and a software update to detect a pressure drop in the fuel injection system. If the system detects a problem, it will disable the high-pressure fuel pump, reduce engine power and lower the temperature under the hood. Owners will see a “seek service” message appear on their dash.

The U.S. National Highway Safety Traffic Safety Administration Office of Defects says they have “significant safety concerns” and are demanding volumes of information from Ford to investigate the issue. These Federal investigators say the fix doesn’t address the core issue in an April 25, 2024 letter released on Thursday, May 9, 2024.

This 11-page letter ask Ford to detail any testing it to verify the fix and whether hardware repairs were needed. Also, it asks Ford to provide an consideration to alternative fixes to the problem and any cost-benefit analysis the company did when it released its fix.

The accusation from safety advocates is Ford choose a cheaper route rather than replacing the gasoline injectors.

Ford told ABCNews it is working with NHTSA during its investigation.
