1970 Kombi “Microbus”

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wisconsin —  A rare, fully restored Volkswagen Kombi “microbus” is set to be one of the major items auctioned at The Gathering, the EAA Aviation Foundation’s major fundraiser on Thursday, July 25, during the annual EAA AirVenture Oshkosh fly-in convention. AirVenture, which runs July 22-28, draws over 600,000 in attendance and more than 10,000 unique airplanes, from homebuilts to combat-ready military aircraft.

The 1970 Kombi “Microbus” has been restored beyond showroom condition. As one of the most sought-after Kombi models, every square inch has been replaced or cleaned to like-new specifications. The leather interior is in impeccable condition, from the front bench all the way back to the third-row seating.

“This VW Kombi is a truly fun cruising machine,” said Christopher Musha, major gift officer for the EAA Aviation Foundation. “For instance, if the 23 windows don’t allow enough sunlight and breeze, open the canvas covered sunroof and break out the suntan lotion. It truly is a one-of-a kind build, being auctioned during EAA’s one-of-a kind event.“

EAA has been connected with Volkswagen vehicles for decades. For more than 40 years, a fleet of VW Beetles has been used on the grounds to make the event happen, starting with EAA founder Paul Poberezny’s iconic “Red 1” Beetle. The 1970 Kombi “Microbus” fits in with the EAA family tradition.

Proceeds from the auction go to the EAA Aviation Foundation to support the Experimental Aircraft Association’s year-round efforts including the support of youth aviation programs. Attendees at The Gathering are eligible to bid on the VW Kombi, as are those prequalified to bid by phone during the sale. For more information, contact EAA at (888) 500-5600 or at donor@eaa.org. The VW Kombi auction offering comes with support from Kocourek Automotive of Wausau, Wisconsin.
